Akumal
Small beach resort Akumal is located 100 km south from Cancun, between Tulum and city Playa del Carmenin municipality Solidaridad on the caribbean mayan riviera in state Quintana Roo in Mexico. It had population of about 1,200 in the year 2005.
In the old Mayan language Akumal is " place of turtles".
The town was founded in 1958 and served as a community for scuba diving. It was founded by a Mexican businessman, writer, archeologist and historian Pablo Bush Romero. His family still owns a big part of Akumal, including the Hotel Club Akumal Caribe which is the biggest resort hotel.
At Akumal bay and also at Half Moon Bay, there is a white sandy beach ideal for snorkeling and swimming. There can be found turtles laying their eggs on the beach. There are big losses in turtle population due to coincidence between their hatching and hurricane season which is from June to November. Many environmental organizations, including CEA (Centro Ecologico Akumal), are settled in the resort area.
There are several shipwrecks of Spanish galleons in Akumal. The most notable story is about Gonzalo Guerrero who shipwrecked here, was taken as a hostage and then he married a Mayan Princess. He began first "mestizos" (euro-americans).
There is a dive shop at Akumal bay. People coming for vacation or vacations can choose from many hotels, condos, accommodation, las villas, lodging opportunities. Many real estate, hotel, condo rentals and rental services is available on the site.
