Coastal city Cancún is located on the Mayan Riviera resorts in Quintana Roo, the state of Mexico. This modern tourist travel vacation resort has many hotels on the beach and is surrounded with Caribbean sea, Nichupte, Bahia de Mujeres ( cancun beachBay of Women) and lagoons of Bojorquez. Commercial section (Cancún city) is to the island connected  by 2 bridges and it has avenues, shops, hotels and restaurants.

History:

Cancun used to be only a small island off the Caribbean sea, Yucatan Peninsula, at the era of pre Columbian and ruins of Maya civilization. Mexican government decided to rebuild it as a travel tourist destinations, with hotels, villas and accommodation. Cancún development started in 1970 and in 80s it grew more rapidly.

The resort was damaged by Hurricane Wilma in 2005, but now it is repaired and operating normally.

In the Hotel zone there are ancient Mayan ruins (Ruinas del Rey). Another ruins site El Meco just outside of the citz on the way to Punta Sam.

 

Tourism:


Cancun has about 140 hotels, 24000 rooms, 380 restaurants plus other condos, real estate, and villas for rent. Over 4 million of visitors come each year to Cancún on the mayan riviera. On the other side of island from Caribbean sea there is a lagoon of Nichupte which is used for jet ski tours in jungle and cruises on boats. The Cancun resort is also a paradise for scuba diving.
