Cozumel, aka Isla Cozumel is a a caribbean island located in Carebbean sea
off the Mexico´s east coast Yucatan Peninsula. The name of the island
means : Island of the Swallows. Cozumel is opposite of Playa del Carmen.
This are is a popular destination for scuba divers and tourists. San
Miguelde Cozumel is the capital of the island.
This
island is 48km long and 16km wide which make it the largest island in
Mexico on the Atlantic side. And after Tiburon Island and island Isla
Angel de la Guarda it is the 3rd largest Mexico island.
Cozumel
is about 60km far from city of Cancun. Most population living on this
island is located in San Miguel. IslaCozumel also has two interesting
areas: Calica and Xcaret with Xel-Ha Water park and archeological ruins
at Xelha.
The
Maya first settled Cozumel,
there were also found Olmec artifacts. Isla Cozumel was sacred to Maya
Goddess of Moon Ix Chel. Most ruins on this island were destroyed during
WW2. In 1518 first spanish visitor Juan de Grijalva and after him Hernan
Cortes and with his fleet destroyed many templates.
