Playa del Carmen

Coastal city Playa Del Carmen is in north of Quintana Roo, on the mayan riviera in Mexico on the cost of Caribbean Sea. It is rapidly growing city with population of about 100,383 in the 2005. After Cancun and Chetumal it is the 3rd biggest city.

It started as a fishing town. Tourism and travel importance as a mayan riviera popular destination began with a ferry service to the island Cozumel, which lies across Cozumel channel and is a famous and favourite scuba diving destination. For many people is Playa del Carmen even better place for relax not only because they can dive there but mainly because it is away and not as crowdy as Cancun on the riviera maya, but beach is of same quality with excellent waters for scuba diving or even cenote diving. 

These days is Playa del Carmen often reffered to as "Playa" and is part of the Riviera Maya (Mayan Riviera) project or concept which includes resort from Cancun to Tulum and also the biosphere reserve in the Sian KaŽan.  

Several big cruise ships used for vacation, tours and travels stops in Playa and dock near Calica docks, 6 miles from city.

Playa resort is a home of many hotels, condos, villas, real estate offers, restaurants, shops, tours with travel guide and many people each year choose it as a place for their vacation.

Government of Mexico wanted to save the reputation of this city and retain its small fishing village charm so there can only be build new buildings with 3 stories only. They do not want to be as large as Cancun.

Playa del Carmen has been a lot influenced by Europe.
